EPISODE 24

Carey Portell | how difficult is it ranching with disabilities

Carey Portell disabled rancher cowgirl missouri speaker

How hard is it being a rancher with a disability?

Today’s podcast is with Missouri cattle rancher and inspirational speaker, Carey Portell. Carey became a Speaker and Blogger, not only to purge and heal, but to encourage others down a positive path in life. She speaks about her four year recovery after becoming a survivor of a drinking and driving collision and her choice to overcome this tragedy. She is partially disabled and works a cattle farm.

“I’m just not used to people seeing in to my life this much, but if you don’t let them see certain moments, vulnerable moments, that is what inspires people to think more”

Her journey is compelling and humbling. Her passion to speak to others about the affects of drinking and driving actually puts her on the road more often, making her more susceptible to encountering another drunk driver. She faces her fears in the hopes to inspire and help others. In addition to speaking about the affects of drinking and driving, Carey also speaks on agriculture, healthcare, faith and community.

Carey is a huge advocate of AgrAbility. Their vision is to enhance quality of life for farmers, ranchers, and other agricultural workers with disabilities, so that they, their families, and their communities continue to succeed in rural America.
