EPISODE 69

Courtney Rich | turn cake making into a thriving business while being a mom and wife

Courtney Rich cakes
Courtney Rich is my guest on today’s podcast. It was great hearing from Courtney how she has built up her cake business while raising her children and being a wife to her husband. I enjoyed hearing some stories of travel and how she and her husband are able juggle their work schedules, kid’s school and activities schedule and date night schedules. I never would have thought, prior to my podcast, about needing to travel for work because of a bustling cake business. Her cool designs and cake tool kits are very practical and make cake design much easier. She also works at a culinary art center in her hometown of Salt Lake City, Utah so if you are ever in the area look her up and see if you can take one of her classes. Courtney has a great social media presence for her fans and friends so make sure to follow her and see when she is visiting your neighborhood. See the links below for all of her social media contacts.

Courtney enjoys a little bit of everything when she travels. She says it’s hard shut down completely from work so she’ll get some work projects and watch movies. When she’s driving around town or in the kitchen she’ll listen to various podcasts. Click here to see other guests choices for listening while traveling

ABOUT

HI, I’M COURTNEY, A SELF-TAUGHT BAKER, OBSESSED WITH CAKE. I long ago ditched box mixes in pursuit of melt-in-your-mouth, to-die-for flavor combinations, fillings and textures. I believe cake must be decadent, life-changing and worthy of celebration! And I believe anyone should be able to bake that kind of cake – and I’m here to teach you just that! I didn’t bake my first cake from scratch until I was 26, when my son turned one. It looked like a big brown mound with sprinkles and a candle – honestly, a train-wreck, but it tasted delicious and I was hooked! Over the last nine years, I’ve taught myself the dos and don’ts of baking cakes through a lot of trial and error. Now, I want to share the simple basics that look impressive, but are easy to master. My goal is to inspire you to give baking from scratch a try. I’m all about, if I can do it, you can too! I hold a bachelor of arts degree from Brigham Young University in broadcast journalism, not food science. The broadcasting degree has come in handy, however.  After 13 years as a focus group moderator for a major television consulting firm, I’m able to bring my experiences full circle as I share my baking passion on local television and in food conferences all over the country. I’m also the mother of two amazing kids, am married to my best friend, and teach cake classes at Orson Gygi Culinary Arts Center, in Salt Lake City.
