Cake by Courtney owner, Courtney Rich, is my guest today. This isn’t déjà vu. Courtney is my first guest to be a repeat guest on my podcast. She is a self taught, baker extraordinaire who is using the lockdown situation to improve her relationships at home and interact on her social media platforms on a more personal basis.

We had a great follow up conversation about how the lockdown affected her cake business, design classes and her new podcast, Courtney: Beyond the Cake. I might be biased, but I think her entry into podcasting as a way to connect with her fans is great. There are so many opportunities to reach customers and fans in different platforms and formats that we should do our best to provide what they want.

“the silver lining of a challenge like this (quarantine) is that it kind of puts them to try something new….you see a ton of people trying new hobbies or DIY projects around the house” ~ Courtney Rich

ABOUT

I long ago ditched box mixes in pursuit of melt-in-your-mouth, to-die-for flavor combinations, fillings and textures. I believe cake must be decadent, life-changing and worthy of celebration! And I believe anyone should be able to bake that kind of cake – and I’m here to teach you just that!

I didn’t bake my first cake from scratch until I was 26, when my son turned one. It looked like a big brown mound with sprinkles and a candle – honestly, a train-wreck, but it tasted delicious and I was hooked! Over the last nine years, I’ve taught myself the dos and don’ts of baking cakes through a lot of trial and error. Now, I want to share the simple basics that look impressive, but are easy to master. My goal is to inspire you to give baking from scratch a try. I’m all about, if I can do it, you can too!

I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brigham Young University in broadcast journalism, not food science. The broadcasting degree has come in handy, however.  After 13 years as a focus group moderator for a major television consulting firm, I’m able to bring my experiences full circle as I share my baking passion on local television and in food conferences all over the country.

I’m also the mother of two amazing kids, am married to my best friend, and teach cake classes at Orson Gygi Culinary Arts Center, in Salt Lake City.

ABOUT

Editor in Chief, Raine Magazine

Twelve-year fashion industry veteran and designer, Nova Lorraine, founded Raine Magazine after noticing the necessity for many young brands and entrepreneurs in the fashion and creative industries to have an expressive outlet. The lack of promotion, access to other successful entrepreneurs, funding and basic business acumen was the main drivers behind launching the world’s most fashionable business magazine.

Before she established Raine, Nova has received many accolades including Haute Couture Designer of the Year and Rising Star Nominations by Fashion Group International. In addition to this esteemed notoriety her designs have graced the big screen, made television appearances on The View and Oprah, and have been modeled in world-renown fashion publications, Italian Vogue and Essence Magazines.

With a Masters in Clinical Psychology and a degree from NYC’s Fashion Institute of Technology, Nova is a strong supporter of continuing education and enjoys speaking at conferences and universities worldwide.
